Do you find it hard to make lifestyle changes to stay healthy? It’s often a challenge to stay healthy and happy as you age. What you don’t realize is that you have more control over your health and well-being than you realize.
Hi, we are Lorie Gardner RN and Lucille Plantemoli, RN, registered nurses and nationally board-certified health and wellness coaches. We are so excited to be guest contributors to Dr. Siegel’s prominent health and wellness newsletter, Our Greatest Wealth is Health. Our passion is working with midlife women and showing them that midlife is a time to become more healthy, vibrant, and joyful.
Midlife women often have issues that include a lack of self-compassion and self-awareness about themselves in regards to their health, managing stress, and good health habits like sleep and weight management. Many women feel lost at this time in their lives. They seek answers from outside sources and don’t always know how to tap into their inner power. Whether you are having health challenges, fear of aging, poor body image, there is hope. Tapping into a whole-person approach to health and wellness where you can access tools within to improve your life and well-being is the direction to take.
There’s More to You Than You Think!
Have you noticed how your thoughts affect your life and health? As health coaches, we believe the majority of what is happening in your body and life usually starts in the mind. We also believe that you can train your brain to think in new ways for better outcomes. We believe that midlife women are creative, resourceful, whole, and experts in themselves. Moving into a better state of health and well-being is an “inside-out” job and takes a process that includes the mind, body, and spirit.
As coaches, we use a holistic model composed of twelve dimensions, but it is the first dimension of self-responsibility and self-love that raises the client’s self-awareness and allows them to look inside at what they really want. We are there to guide them and provide them with tools and a roadmap to get what they want. The client is put in the “driver’s seat” to figure out what they want and how to make it happen. Clients are encouraged not to give all their power away to experts in the health field or to look to someone to “fix” them. Coaches work collaboratively with doctors, therapists, and psychiatrists when working with clients, but the client is encouraged to be the driver of this process, not a spectator.
The principles of self-responsibility and self-love are the two piers that support the bridge of wellness. When clients begin to love themselves and take responsibility for themselves, their overall life improves as well as their health.
Use Your Mind to Improve Your Health
The mind is such a powerful tool and if used properly can create our health and reality. Imagine being able to shake off limiting beliefs like, “aging is just about decline and there’s not much I can do about it” or “ weight gain in midlife is just a curse all women need to accept.” You can control more of your health outcomes than you think. To do so you need to understand the capabilities of your mind. This is where health coaching can assist. Although clients are capable to change their health, they may need support, tools, and further understanding of the connection and power of their mind, body, and spirit to improve health outcomes.
During the coaching process, we help clients create action items for themselves to move the needle toward their goals, but we also help them write a new story about themselves. Often, it’s those old stories we hold in our heads and heart that hold us back from being our best. Imagine using your thoughts to create more inner power and healing and improve your health and happiness. As coaches, we help you identify new steps to restore your health and vitality in ways that work for you.
What’s Holding You Back?
Fear and overwhelm about how to start improving one’s health can be paralyzing. There is so much information out “there” in many places including social media and the internet. Taking the first steps to improve your health could be as simple as making the decision to work with a health coach. A health coach will help you evaluate where you are today and help you move from problem thinking to solutions and letting go of what holds you back. Having a coach can help you live a more rewarding, vibrant, and healthy life!
